Biography of Sarojini Naidu
Introduction:
Sarojini Naidu was
a freedom fighter and poet of our country India. She has also been the
President of the Indian National Congress and was later appointed as the
Governor of the United Provinces. She is known as the Nightingale of India and
was the first Indian woman to be appointed as Uttar Pradesh Governor of India.
She was a vigorous participant in the Indian independence movement.
Sarojini Naidu also
called for Gandhiji by joining the national movement and collaborated with him
in the popular Salt March. Sarojini's daughter Padmaja also joined the freedom
movement and was also a part of the Quit India movement. Soon after Indian
independence, she was appointed as the Governor of the state of West Bengal.
Early life:
Sarojini Naidu was
born on13 February 1879 in Hyderabad, India. Her father Aghornath Chattopadhyay
was a noted scholar and mother was a poetess and wrote in Bengali. Having a
sharp intellect since childhood, she passed the 12 th examination at a tender
age of 12 with good marks and composed a poem called Lady of the Lake at the
age of 13. She went to England in 1895 to pursue higher education and continued
to write poems along with studies. The Golden Threshold was her first poetry
collection. Her second and third poems Bird of Time and Broken Wing made her a
well-known poetess.
Sarojini was a very
good student since childhood, she had very good knowledge of Urdu, Telugu,
English, Bengali, and other languages. At the age of 12, Sarojini Ji topped the
matriculation examination at Madras University, which earned her much acclaim
and name. Sarojini's father wanted her to become a scientist or to study
further in Gadit, but she was interested in writing poetry, she would once
write a 1300 line poem in her book of Gadit, which her father was amazed to see
and After copying it, we get it distributed everywhere.
Contribution:
Sarojini Naidu was
actually one of the gems of 20th century India. That title was known as
"Bharat Kokila". Her contribution was not only limited to the field
of politics, but she was also a famous poet. At a young age, Naheedu's play
"Maher Munir", has attracted scholarships for study abroad.
She was informed
about the struggle for independence for the political giants of European
countries, she had visited. She married Dr. Muthyala Govindarajulu Naidu, a
South India. Intergenerational marriage was not acceptable in society when the
marriage took place at a time. Her acts helped raise many eyebrows. In 1905, a
collection of poems, which she composed, was published under the title "Golden
Threshold".
National
Movement :
Sarojini Naidu left
the partition of Bengal in 1905 and it was decided to join the Indian freedom
struggle. She later met regularly with Gopal Krishna Gokhale, who initiated her
to the stalwarts of the Indian independence movement. She met Mohandas
Karamchand Gandhi, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, CP Ramaswamy Iyer, and Muhammad Ali
Jinnah. With such an encouraging atmosphere, Sarojini later moved on to become
the leader of the Indian National Congress Party. She traveled extensively to
the United States and several European countries as a flag bearer of the Indian
nationalist struggle.
Congress
President:
Shortly Sarojini
Naidu became a national leader. She became regarded as one of the distinguished
leaders of the 'Indian National Congress'. In 1925, she was elected the
president of the Kanpur session of the Indian National Congress. By then she
had worked with Gandhiji for ten years and had deep political experience.
Before independence, being the president of the Congress in India was a great
national honor and when it was given to a woman, its importance increased even
more. Gandhi Ji welcomed Sarojini Naidu as the Congress chief in very
encouraging words, 'For the first time, an Indian woman will get the honor of
getting this greatest gift of the country.'
Governor :
After the
attainment of independence, the leaders who took the country to that goal now
had a different task. Till today she had struggled. But now the responsibility
of nation-building fell on her shoulders. Some leaders got jobs in government
machinery and administration. Sarojini Naidu was also one of them. She was
appointed as the Governor of Uttar Pradesh. it was the largest province in the
country in terms of growth and population.
Accepting that
position, she said, 'I am feeling like a' bird of the jailed '. But she could
not defer to the wish of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru for whom she had deep
love and affection. She, therefore, settled in Lucknow and performed her
political duties by courtesy and dignified behavior there.
Conclusion:
After the
independence of the country in 1947, Sarojini was made the Governor of Uttar
Pradesh, she was the first woman governor. On 2 March 1949, while working in
the office, she came to HeartAttack and died. Sarojini Ji is a symbol of ideal
for all women of the country, she was a strong woman, from whom we get
inspiration.
